Had LOADS of fun at Muse! M&T with us across from our seats!

“Intro and Uprising”

“Starlight” Dedicated to the Marriage Proposal Couple!

“Plug In Baby”

“Undisclosed Desires”

Sting with Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra
June 16, 2010
Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre
Irvine, CA

Wow this was a fun show. Brought just the camera and left the mics at home. GREAT seats did not hurt!

This was a new song for me. Included as a bonus track for “Brand New Day”, I had never heard it before, but loved the story behind it, and the music is fantasic. This was my favorite song of the night!
Here is “End Of The Game”

“King Of Pain” was probably my favorite Police song of the night, and it was the first song that most every stood up for…

“Desert Rose” and “Fragile” both sounded great too…

13th row, dead center!

BTW, here is the complete lineup for the night. I didn’t post the opening w/The Seeing Rodrigos, since I didn’t know what song they did. I also didn’t post a video of the “History Of The Steel Guitar” since that was pretty long.

3 PM–DOORS OPEN
3:15 PM–THE SEEING RODRIGOS
3:30 PM–MESHUGGA BEACH PARTY
4:15 PM–BUDDY AND SUZY
5 PM–STEVE TROVATO AND CARL VERHEYEN
6 PM–”CRAZY” JOE TRITSCHLER
7 PM–”HONEYBOY” EDWARDS
7:30 PM–ELECTRIC 12-STRING NIGHTMARE
7:45 PM–BRIAN LONBECK AND ELAINE FRIZZELL
8:30 PM–HISTORY OF THE STEEL GUITAR
9:30 PM–JOEL PATERSON AND THE MODERN SOUNDS
10:15 PM–DEKE DICKERSON TRIBUTE TO JOHNNY RAMONE
11 PM–GEORGE TOMSCO AND 3 BALLS OF FIRE
MIDNIGHT–DUANE EDDY

So this third and final GGF post, will include Joel Paterson and The Modern Sounds doing Jazz Me Blues. This guys sounded very “old” and really had a early guitar sound to them.

You can always count on Deke’s set to be different and 2010 was no exception. With the voice of Spongebob Square Pants (Tom Kenny) on vocals…A Tribute to Johnny Ramone…Blitzkreig Bop

The next to last act of the evening was an old schooler….George Tomsco with 3 Balls of Fire (and Deke on a organ that he bought just for this song), here is Sugar Shack.

Not much needs to be said about Duane Eddy…I shot his whole set. A legend.

Until next year…

Well, continuing the review/videos from The 7th Annual GGF…We had the return of Crazy Joe Tritschler playing a set with tiny Mosrite-like Electric Guitars…”I Don’t Like I Did Before”

I was very excited to see one of the last original delta blues guitarist, he actually was with Robert Johnson the night he was poisoned…David “Honeyboy” Edwards along with Joel Paterson playing “Baby You Gotta Change Your Mind”

There is always at least one oddball “break out some old instruments” kinda thing. One year, it was the Double Neck Trainwreck, another year it was “The All Bigsby Band”, and this year…the 12 String Electric Nightmare, doing “Hey Mr 12 String Band”

There is only one performer who has played at each of the 7 GGF’s and it’s Brian Lonbeck, the Barn Burner of Bakersfield. He performed a very special set with fellow Mosrite doubleneck axe-slinger Elaine Frizzell of Nashville. Here they are doing “Dueling Banjos”

Until part 3…

I have seen Dave Alvin solo 4 or 5 times, and reunited with the Original Blasters twice. A friend in Greenville, SC knew someone that was opening for Dave (and a couple of Guilty Women, more on that) at the Handlebar close to downtown, and I brought my camera. Dave has always been cool with audio and video taping, (see clip at bottom) and I was able to get most of the show, from among the lucky crowd that was there on a Wednesday night. One of my favorite solo songs is Ashgrove…

Well, along with just Dave and an acoustic guitar was a terrific lap guitar player, Cindy Cashdollar. She was amazing and really brought something new to Dave’s show. I have seen Dave with his Guilty Men a few times, but stripped down to just Dave and a couple of guitars really showcased the songs and the talent both folks brought out in each other. He then brought out Christy McWilson for background vocals and she was a nice addition, lending her voice to most of the songs that night. Dave closed with Marie Marie, which featured all three of them.

All in all one of the very best times I’ve seen Dave, and I am so glad I got most of the show recorded.

As I mentioned above, Dave has always been cool about taping allowing soundboard access, mics, video, whatever. I love that and have picked up at least one of his CD’s at every show! Support the official releases! But here are a couple of clips with the Guilty Men + Amy Farris, live in Los Angeles in 2004 that he let me film and record with special Soundboard+Audience Audio Mix.

So Long Baby Goodbye

So lets see how this works…Jan 16, 2010 was the 7th annual Deke Dickerson Guitar Geek Festival. The usually suspects were in tow, and we got prime seating again this year. However, make no mistake “The GGF” is a ritual. This is my 4th one, and they are grueling. I usually show up around 1:30pm for a 3PM Door Open, and 4:30pm show. It ended last year at around 1:45am. So again, I was first in line at the lovely Anaheim Plaza Hotel Ballroom on Jan 16, 2010. Jamie and Ben showed up with a gang of the regulars in from as far as Salt Lake City and St George, UT.

For those that are GGF Virgins, (most of you) it’s pretty much named properly. The headliner this year was Duane Eddy, but I have seen a tribute to Surf Bands (Almost every major player in the surf music world played one year), with Nokie Edwards of the Ventures, Rockabilly bands, AMAZING fingerpickers, and a Heavy Metal Mandolin player in past years. It’s a great day of discovering people that don’t get all the album sales but are TRULY unbelieable players. Plus its fun and you see really old guitars, off beat stuff, and I wouldn’t miss it for anything!

First up were the world famous jewish surf band, Meshugga Beach Party (Here with “If I Were A Rich Man”)

Then Buddy and Suzy Dughi with Folsom Prison Blues…

I’ll leave you with two fanastic guitar players, Steve Trovato and Carl Verheyen doing “Dark Eyes” (Until the next post)
